The radiation issue is something that worries me personally. Not because of the radiation per se, but about the future of 'clean' energy. Ofcourse, it's definately true that radiation leaks are nothing to scoff at, but in the end nuclear energy is a lot cleaner then fossil fuel-based energy generation. Not to mention the political impact of the ever scarcening fossil fuels.
There have already been fearmongers that perpetuate the 'nuclear = evil'-myth. And not your average village idiot either. No. Greenpeace is using Japan in their scare tactics as well. It disgusts me how uninformed these people are. For all the good intentions, they seem to have little knowledge about the facts in this and many other matters.
But before I bury myself into a depression, I also have some good news!
Remember the dog I posted the video about earlier? It has been reunited with it's owner! This kind of thing makes me feel all warm and fuzzy on the inside.
And on that positive note, I bid you a good day!

I don't know what's it all about. The Japanese were prepared. The casualties are at their minimum. Any other country would suffer something close to wiping its surface, but Japan was prepared and handled everything with dignity. There's no need for compassion, but to say "bravo, you fight well"

Yeah they did, but cant you make a safe nuclear reactor? those was like 30-40 years old and was near the sea.. kind of bad place to have them there i think.. im not so good at it but..
I am not diminishing the loss of life from these horrific events by any means. But, however harsh it might seem, we can't bring those people back. We should honor them, pray for them and help them in any way we can.
But I am talking about the lasting global effects of this disaster. Effects that will set back the energy sector by years.
I'm happy t hear about the dog, and my heart and prayers go out to those in Japan. We need to start focusing on developing nuclear fusion and get away from fission.

When I was a child, they taught us that 9.0 earthquakes would almost never happen. That tells me 2 things: 1) Buildings aren't built up to withstand something builders don't expect to happen, and 2) Even if they wanted to, there is not enough data to utilize if they did want to build them to resist such magnitude. The best thing that could come out of this situation would be for other nuclear sites to retrofit their plants to conform to new standards set by an actual recorded 9.0 earthquake (and tsunami should the plant be coastal). I feel nuclear energy is superior to fossil fuel burning; however, I cannot fully support it until there is a proper storage facility that will keep the secure for eons to come.

thanks for your insights on this sad topic. I had never thought about this tragedy in relation to the future of fuel. I'm glad people who care about japan are also thinking of the future.
I only hope the problem with the nuclear reactor doesn´t get too serious. Japanese people already suffered toom much. Let´s only pray for them and be strong as the japanese already showed they are.
Nuclear energy is one of the best forms of energy that we have. It's very efficient. However, when something bad happens it fails hard! It sucks that there is negative information on nuclear energy and how uninformed many people are. Great post!

I really do hate the fact that people and the media are not so much overreacting but are being hateful towards nuclear energy just due to a small leak, it didn't even have a meltdown as most people I'd talk to would have be believe.
Nuclear is really clean energy and if kept under control it is simply the best method of producing power with the efficiency of solar panels and wind generators etc being as they are at the moment.
It's the most expensive disaster ever to occur.

I think this tragedy might make Japan a little wary of nuclear power in the future. I wonder if they're going to try an alternative energy source after this disaster is cleaned up.
Theres too many places and too much trouble in the world, it sucks that we cant focus our attention to helping japan get back on its feet.
Japan doesn't have the resources to farm the wind, sun etc. Perhaps their best bet would be to investigate tidal generation.
